My Project
We absolutely love our little school that is big on learning! However, it does have its challenges. Our school is quite old and in serving 325 students, most of whom come from low-income families, we pack a lot in to a little space. We encourage our students to find their passions! We provide a wide variety of low or no cost opportunities for our students. They are able to participate in vocal music and/ or band, join the robotics team, sing and dance in the Talent Show, or get exercise and confidence on our Girls on the Run and Let Me Run teams. These groups all meet during the course of the school day and practice and perform within our auditorium/ multi-purpose room/ gym space. This means that our PE teacher, Mr. Hahn, has been tasked with working around this crazy schedule to plan safe, fun, and physically engaging lessons for students in grades K through 5.
Sharing a space for gym has proven challenging- with our poor gym teacher hiding equipment in every nook and cranny!
Some equipment had to be moved from the storage closet to behind curtains on the stage or under the stage (its scary in there!) so that he can even have an office. Having equipment squirreled away in multiple areas makes it difficult to actively engage students across the grade levels.
Our goal is to purchase two outdoor storage sheds for Mr. Hahn to organize and store PE equipment. You want to do parachutes with kindergarten but basketball with third grade later? No problem!! With access to a courtyard just outside the gym, Mr. Hahn will be able to easily access the storage sheds, gather the needed equipment for each class period, and more fully engage our students during their gym class.
