The raised gardening beds requested will aid our students in the creation of a community garden. Many of our students live in low income housing or apartments where there is limited outdoor space for planting. At Phillip Showell, we have established an outdoor area that will be perfect for creating a community garden to benefit our students. The garden space will include three raised gardening beds and a gardening table where the students will be able to plant a variety of crops. Our Phillip Showell students will be working with 4H staff and community volunteers to create a community garden, one that produces fresh fruits and vegetables to supplement the meals that our students are provided by the local food bank. Our first goal is for students to learn about gardening from the beginning- building the planter boxes and a gardening table, adding soil, and learning about seasonal crops and crop rotation. Our second goal is that our students will learn more about nutrition. We are blessed that our students are given a meal by the local food bank, as many would not get that at home in the evenings. However, these meals are minimal and lack fresh vegetables and fruit. By planting and growing their own produce, the students will have the opportunity to learn to prepare fresh dishes to supplement their food bank meals, as well as receive the health benefits of eating these nutritious foods. Audrey Hepburn said "To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." We believe in our Phillip Showell students and search for every opportunity available to give them an even brighter tomorrow. This community garden will provide a unique and healthy learning opportunity for our students. Thank you for your support!
