Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. Some come from cities just as big as New York, others from rural areas filled with the sights, sounds and smells of greener spaces.
What all of my students agree on is that they love hands-on projects where they can create something new and improve their community.
Our yard is one of the few open spaces in our neighborhood, but it is far from green. The concrete and asphalt are great for a game of frisbee or basketball, but they do little to attract birds or insects, let alone inspire and educate students looking for greenery.
We will use this saw to build planter boxes for greening our space with perennial plants, and tables and benches for students and staff to sit on.
As the weather gets warmer, my students itch to be outdoors. The tools we are requesting will allow more students to participate in building projects that they can feel proud of and enjoy for years to come.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
