Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is Laura Bush's first year to have a Garden Club. The students have done a wonderful job getting the entire project underway. They showed an interest in the club and were required to write an essay of why they would like to be part of the Laura Bush Garden Club. We had so many that were interested, that we sadly had to cut our numbers to 36 students. Because we are a title I school, all materials were donated by either Stokes Hardware or the student's and their families; from the tubs and wheels to the soil, plants and small watering containers. The students put the wheels on the tubs to make it portable and a usable resource for the entire school. They had to open the many bags and fill the tubs with soil and then were able to begin planting the vegetables and herbs.
The new materials will help continue to make our Garden Club and garden a success.
After we plant the items using the new tools, we can label the plants with our new tabs and feed them with food from the compost tumbler. This will also show them how food waste is able to be reused for plant food. We will grow tomatoes with the trellis raised boxes so the students can see how different vegetables grow and the different space and directions they grow.
Our goal is to continue to grow our garden and build a foundation of knowledge and love for gardening and perhaps have some future agricultural leaders come from the Laura Bush Garden Club. If not future leaders, maybe a simple garden of their own at home with their families that they can not only grow food from, but grow together as a family.
