Help Our Firsties Get Rewarded for Good Choices- Part 3
Help me give my students magnetic letters to build words, read and develop the mathematical concept of one to one correspondence as they touch each letter.
I teach a fabulous group of students who are inspiring, motivating, and fun to teach. Our school is large, diverse, grades K-8, high-poverty in an urban area of Philadelphia, PA that experiences crime. The school receives Title I funding and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
These firsties are the future readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, computer analysts, engineers, artists, and musicians of the world.
The students, who come to school eager to learn, are from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters, multi-generational, or extended family living. My students have a variety of learning abilities and disabilities including special education, ADD, ADHD, vision impairment, and English as a Second Language. I am dedicated to meeting their needs daily, along with building their self-esteem and confidence.
My Project
We have a PBIS program in our school where the students earn Falcon Feathers for positive behavior and good choices. The students will be able to spend the Falcon Feathers money on incentives such as extra break time, snacks, or treasure box prizes. They can earn money daily and then spend it at the class store on Fridays.
Items will all be priced differently so students will have to decide if they want immediate gratification with smaller items or to save their money for larger items that cost more.
Not only will they learn the value of saving and spending, but other math skills like counting, adding, and subtracting.
We need magnetic letters to help the store have its own signs and price list. The children will squeal with delight when they see these magnetic letters in smaller sets available in our classroom store. It will be such a great learning experience to build the words with tangible letters just like we will use in the store signing. The shower curtain is needed to separate the store from the closet. This year brings a whole new set of challenges for our students. I am excited to rebuild our community spirit as we return to in-person learning. Thank you for considering our classroom.
