Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
SJH Forever has been part of the district in Bakersfield that does not participate in PPAACC (Pep and Pageantry Art Association of Central California) which is an indoor colorguard competition that all the high schools in our district participate in and all other junior high districts. Well I just started coaching this year (I did colorguard at SJH and graduated there in 2018) and I told everyone my one goal this year with coaching is to fight for these kids to get that experience before high school to get to do PPAACC. There are more junior highs within this district but if I can do this I'm hoping I can get the other schools in as well. I am going to get the kids to do some fundraising that will cover entry but we will need more help to get equipment, supplies, uniforms, etc... These kids are amazing kids and with the right motivation, I know these kids are capable of this! They even got permission to participate in a showcase competition that one of the schools that participates in PPAACC hosted and they placed second! I was so proud and I asked them if they would like to do more things like this and they didn't hesitate to say yes! The majority of my team is 7th graders so a lot of them want to continue and are excited for next year!
I have done colorguard for my whole life and it has changed my life for the better.
When I was in junior high I had already done PPAACC with an independent group and hoped we would get to but we never did so I joined another independent group. Then I did it with my high school and having that experience helped so much!
