My students need nine sets of series books. Each set will have about two books per title. We need at least two different titles for each book series.

My Students
My students love going to our classroom library to self select books. Seeing an eager or even apprehensive reader sit on the carpet and get excited over reading brings a smile to my face. Help my students exceed their expected growth in reading by providing students with more books in our library.
I have 20 energetic second graders in a suburban school in a large urban school district.
Our school is 56% free and reduced lunch which is increased from 8% in just a few years. Since implementing a balanced literacy program, our students have a more enthusiastic approach to their reading. My students go to check out books a few days a week where they select their own books on their specified level. Students have daily opportunities to read independently to build reading stamina. They love finding a special spot in the class to dive into a book they selected on their own. Students take a bag of books home nightly to continue their reading. Our school has seen significant growth in reading with this new program. Having a large classroom library helps to foster this growth.
My Project
A corner of our room is our classroom library. On the shelves are buckets of books with alphabet letters on them. Through assessments students are assigned a letter based on their ability in reading. For example if a student is a letter level "L" they pick books from that bucket. For some letters there are more choices and for others the books are limited. Students will self select books based on their interest and level.
We need nine sets of series books. Each set will have about two books per title. We need at least two different titles for each book series. Having a larger selection of books keeps students motivated and eager to read. Moving students towards reading chapter books allows them to dig deep into character study and analysis while increasing their reading comprehension.
The bottom line is when students have choice it makes a task more meaningful to them.
Having a wide variety of interesting books will keep them be interested in reading. The more students read, the better they become at reading. It is just that simple.
