it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
During the pandemic, I found great comfort in taking care of my plants, observing their growth, and filling my space with new life. When schools reopened last year, I set about to turn the space into the same lush and green learning space. The class exploded with hanging plants, potted plants, cuttings, and plant babies. The space felt calm, green, and protective - even more important to me in light of getting through such a hard COVID year. The students were integral to this process - they watered the plants every week, rooted their own plants and measured their growth, and repotted their plants in soil. They even did an art project where they gifted their families with plants that they had grown and nurtured for months. Students began bringing their own plant babies to class and helping our garden grow. In these ways, the students and I collectively created a positive space for each other.
Through your generous donations, you can help to give my new students their own green thumbs by funding materials to help our classroom garden grow.
This project simply asks for a new watering can, potting soil, and enough pots so that all of my students can grow and nurture their own plants throughout the year. Seeing what a positive impact this environment made in my classroom last year, I hope to build upon that experience and give my students even greater opportunities to plant, grow, and observe. Not only will this positively affect our classroom environment, it will also provide ample opportunities for scientific inquiry, observation, art, and team building. In this way, I hope to "plant the seeds" of caring for the environment, and help encourage a lifelong love of environmentalism and caring for the planet.
