My students need the entrance fee for this excursion, which would include a lesson on the culture and foods of Argentina and a professional Tango lesson, show and meal.
When you walk into my classroom, you will see an enthusiastic community of teachers and learners. My students are eager to learn Spanish Language and Culture and share their own knowledge with others. My goal is for each and every one of my students to be as well versed in culture as in language.
My students are part of a community of diverse learners.
Many, of my students are the children of first and second generation immigrants. These students come from low-income households, which makes it difficult for many of them to take advantage of the cultural institutions NYC has to offer. My students have chosen to take AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature courses because they know the importance of being multilingual in order to succeed in our globalized world. My students are our top second language learners in our school and they are taking AP courses in order to be better prepared for college and their future academic and career endeavors. Our school is a Public NYC High School that offers Spanish, Italian, Russian and Chinese as part of our Language Curricula. We serve a large population of English Language Learners. Through Title III funding we are able to offer after-school tutoring, as well as other support services in order to help our students excel academically.
My Project
Last year I had the opportunity to score AP Spanish Language and Culture Exams with the College Board. The students are given a topic and they are to compare its effect on the US and to a Region or Country of the Spanish-Speaking World. As our National Foreign Language Learning Standards state: "Through comparisons and contrasts with the language being studied, students develop insight into the nature of language and the concept of culture and realize that there are multiple ways of viewing the world". Buenos Aires Tango Steak House gives the students a lesson on the culture and foods of Argentina. The students then have a traditional Argentine meal. The students will then learn the history and evolution of traditional dances from the Milonga to the Tango. While they dine, professional dancers will perform these dances and then the students will receive a Tango Dance Lesson. It is best to speak from true knowledge and experience. Please help me to grant my students this opportunity.
I believe that exposing my students to the variety and differences that exist within the many cultures that the Spanish-Speaking World is comprised of, not only will my students be better prepared for the Cultural Comparison task on the AP Spanish Language Exam, but they will also become life long-learners by using the language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.
Learning occurs all around us, not only in the school. This trip will also allow my students to use the world as their classroom.
