I am a first grade teacher in Fremont, California. My students are hard working, passionate individuals who will surely go on to do great things in their lives. Our teachers work with students from all first grade classes in order to give students the most equitable learning environment possible.
More than one third of my students are second generation immigrants which makes it more difficult for them to acclimate to American schooling and English as a second language.
Working on computers is one way to help our English Learners better learn the langauge through reading, writing, and math programs.
My first graders are eager to use computers whenever possible. Our school currently has one set for the entire grade level which means that our class gets to use computers once a week. However, the demands of 21st century skills are moving our teaching more and more toward computerized skills.
My students will use the computers to complete research projects on animals, popular figures in history, and to type their stories.
Our students also listen to audio books on the internet which helps strengthen their reading skills. The students are highly motivated to complete their work on the computer whenever given the chance. Teaching computer literacy will help my students reach their goals in future schooling and beyond.
