Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is very small, but diverse. We not only have many regular education classes, but also have 5 special education classes. Many of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students come from homes where either their parents are field workers or both parents work full-time to make ends meet. Our school is a Title I school with 81% of our students are from low income families.
In the past few years, our school has gone through a transformation.
We have worked hard on developing our climate and culture, so our children feel welcomed and included. Whenever a new staff member comes to our school, they comment on how nice our kids are. They comment on what a wonderful, kind school culture we have. We have worked very hard at that! I really want our sweet, nice students to have the best school experience possible regardless of their socio-economic status.
My Project
Every year, I do a project that asks for one thing. I ask for clothes for our front office. Every year, we have happy, excited, bright children who are hoping to have the best experience ever! The problem with young children is that they get so engaged in their learning and play that they push going to the bathroom back as long as they can. My son used to be just like that! He would be so engaged that he would hold it until he just couldn't hold it any longer. Then, before he'd get to the bathroom, he would have an accident!
Having a potty accident at school can be just the most embarrassing and traumatic thing EVER for a young child!
I have kids who just cry because they are afraid others will make fun of them. I love being able to put clothes in the office for these occasions. Children from the whole school can borrow clothes, wash them, and bring them back so that when they have an accident, there's clothes there waiting for them. Many parents put clothes in their children's backpacks. Sadly, not all parents do! For those children whose parents forget, having something for them in the office is such a wonderful thing.
