My Project
I am a teacher/librarian at an elementary school that serves many Navy and Army families in Hawaii. I'd like to purchase excellent children's fiction books for my upper elementary students. In Hawaii, librarians annually recommend high-quality literature on the Nene Award Nominee List. This project asks for books from the Nominee List for the 2024-25 school year and a Newbery Honor Book.
I've selected books from the list that focus on social-emotional learning to spark discussions such as self-image, ethnic diversity, and entrepreneurship.
Every year, my students in grades 4-6 vote for the Hawaii Nene Award, the fiction book award chosen by students across the state. I'd like to encourage my students to read books from the Nene Award Nominee List by having monthly book club meetings based on these books. Multiple copies of the book of the month and a game buzzer system will allow my students to play a "Jeopardy" style game to showcase their knowledge of the books. Students will work in teams to answer questions collaboratively using the buzzers.
