Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school library would like to acquire five iPads that we can check out, year after year, to special needs teachers with autistic students. The iPad has been hailed as a wonderful tool to boost communicativeness among autistic kids.
Let me tell you something about our school, then about our special needs classes.
The school is a K-8 Center with some 900 students. It is located in South Florida.
Most of the children are first-generation Americans. Their parents are from the Caribbean and from Central and South America. They work in low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry.
We are not an affluent school: over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch because they come from low-income households. The five iPads that we are requesting will be used by the autistic children at our school, who are served by a large special needs department staffed by devoted teachers. The department is big because we pull special needs students from all over our city. As far as possible, our special needs children study and play with the rest of our students. They are a vital part of our family.
My Project
How will the iPads benefit our students? iPads have been found to boost communicativeness among severely autistic children. Kids who are severely introverted suddenly find their voice.
The iPad also increases socialization and lengthens attention span. There are various specially-designed apps for autistic children, including apps that help kids identify emotions and develop vocabulary.
We're very fortunate that we have a second-grade teacher who knows a lot about iPads and apps. He has volunteered to train the special needs teachers on the use of iPads in the classroom.
The benefits that these iPads will bring to our autistic students will be huge.
Our children come from households with low incomes and are unlikely to have access to iPads without your help.
Please remember that the iPads will be housed in the school library and checked out to needy students for years to come. This project will change the lives of scores of needy children.
