My Project

Picture an amazing classroom library full of readers! The first thing we typically think about in a classroom library are piles and piles of great storybooks, beautiful colorful hardcovers, and series books organized for kids to choose from and fall in love with. But what we rarely check for are those inviting nonfiction, informational texts. In fact, studies show that nonfiction informational texts only make up 10 percent of texts in classroom libraries, and an even lower percentage in low-income schools such as ours.

This is a major problem because, as the website Roomtoread explains, "Nonfiction helps children develop critical thinking, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to read and understand complex texts".

The article goes on to share that "nonfiction can help students develop knowledge of their environment and society..." so why do we not see more of these texts in classroom libraries?

If funded, this project will prioritize the addition of nonfiction texts to our current classroom library, offering new and exciting informational books that are attractive to our readers. Our hope is that these books will expand our readers interests and ideas in more complex, relevant texts.
