My students need this Big Book Center for our Literacy Station, as we currently have no place to store our big books.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Big Books are SO much fun. We have many literacy stations in our classroom, but our big book station is NOT properly cared for! We have no place to store the books. Currently, they are on a shelf in the teacher closet, which makes it difficult to choose the ones needed for our station. PLEASE help us!
We are in South Texas at a public elementary school of about 850 students PK-5.
We are located in a coastal town, which has chemical plants and fishing industries. We have many migrant families due to lots of agriculture in our area. Our students are over 70% free and reduced lunch, so many of them have had no exposure to a variety of life experiences, which would increase their knowledge. Our community includes a diverse group of cultures. We have Burmese refugee children, other Asian children, whose parents work at the plants, African American, Hispanic and White students. The students are very eager to learn and, for the most part, the parents want what is best for their child - no matter what. They may have limited income but they still try to help do whatever they can to help their children. The students LOVE books and Big Books are an enriching learning experience for them.
My Project
By providing our classroom with a Big Book easel, my students' learning could be enriched in many ways. Right now, I have no easel on which to place the books when I read them. They are BIG, so an easel would help the children be able to experience the pictures more effectively. The books are currently stored in my teacher closet and the holders would help make finding the right book much easier. As the students use the Big Books for a Literacy Station, they are able to develop many skills. For example, they may simple enjoy the story, find words with vowels or spelling patterns and use highlighter tape to mark those words. In addition to finding various word types, students may take it even further and write a new ending for the story - or tell how the story would be different if... Reading is the most important skill one can learn. Big Books are engaging and the students WANT to use them. As the students make connections with these books, their learning increases.
Having a Big Book Holder is important for the care of our big books - but more important - could make the learning process easier for them.
In addition, it has a magnetic white board on the front, which could be used for a word study Literacy Station. I think a big book easel would enrich the students' lives but also make our classroom more efficient, while teaching the students proper care of big books.
