Help Newcomer Students Develop Their English Literacy
My students need these specific books at their levels that they've researched and are looking forward to reading together in class! They also need 4 more Chromebooks so that we can have enough computers for everyone.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember how crazy it was trying to navigate through middle school? Now imagine that you're doing it in a new country, in a language you don't speak, yet, and a culture that's foreign to you!
My students are Newcomers, which means that they have all very recently immigrated to the United States.
They came from diverse countries including Armenia, Burma, Cambodia, China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, The Philippines, Peru, Russia, Thailand, and Yemen. My amazing students are already fluent and literate in one language - and some in even more- and now they are working hard in my class to learn English so that they will have more opportunities in their new home.
My Project
My students show up every day ready to work on their English, but they can't do this without enough materials to go around! Right now they are taking turns using computers and sharing books (Have you ever tried to read an entire chapter book over your friend's shoulder? It's not ideal!) This project will ensure that each of my students has access to books at their own English proficiency level. It will also allow students to access language-learning sites such as Rosetta Stone and Duolingo on Chromebooks and work on their English and computer literacy.
Donating to my classroom will directly improve the education of 85 resilient students who need the books they're interested in to learn how to read in English in order to fulfill their dreams of becoming doctors, immigration lawyers, artists, activists, and teachers, and more in their new country.
