Help Nemo! 200 Gallon Saltwater Reef Tank Needs Clean Water

Help me give my students an Reverse Osmosis System that provides pure, contaminant-free water to our classroom's 200 gallon reef tank. It has been a struggle keeping our corals healthy using low-quality tap water.

My Students

My students are bright, friendly, and very hardworking individuals. I'm using our 200 gallon classroom reef aquarium and our DonorsChoose library to introduce many AP chemistry topics via this modality. In addition, the marine biology students will study its fish, corals, polyps, invertebrates, and micro-fauna. Coral reefs have some of the highest biodiversity in the world.

Nearly 60% of my students are on free or reduced-price lunch, and none have ever studied saltwater fish and invertebrates first-hand.

They have, however, expressed a strong interest in learning more about marine fish and invertebrates and the reefs they live on. Many of my students enjoy reading about them and dream of becoming veterinarians, astrobiologists, chemists, environmentalists, and marine biologists.

My Project

This Reverse Osmosis System will dramatically help keep our marine reef tank clean and healthy. Throughout the school year, my students will learn hands-on about solution and acid/ base chemistry, Ksp, Henry's Law (dissolved gases) as well as basic and integrated laboratory process skills, ecology, and water quality/pollution. I try to tie in as much real-world experience as possible into my chemistry classes.

By exposing my students to the wonders of the reef, you will make a huge difference in my students' lives.

My kids experience great success on their AP exams each May because I try my best to tie in real-world applications and all the chemical processes that occur in our classroom's reef tank, as they relate to most of the topics covered on the AP exam. But most importantly, hopefully after learning about the reef and its inhabitants, my students will be more focused on helping preserve it in the future.
