Help Native American Teens Get Involved in Their Culture
Help me give my students books about Native American culture, and bookcases to create a take-home library as well as supplies for the classroom that they need to help them learn.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Historically, Native American students have been deprived of learning about their history, writings, culture, and art in school. My District sought to change that by creating new classes such as the 12th grade English class, Native American Perspectives, as well as a Navajo Government class and a Navajo Language class. I am in the second year of teaching the Native American Perspectives course at Camelback High School. We have learned about Native American origin stories and read Trickster tales. We have learned about other tribes and nations in the US. We have read poems, stories, and essays about what it means to be Native American and we have also learned about some of the issues Native Americans face both on and off the Reservation.
Many students are excited to go back home and have their parents read what we do in class and they share knowledge with their siblings because their families lack basic knowledge of their history, language, and culture.
My students who have younger siblings try to set an example for them. After talking to them, I came up with the idea of starting a library in the classroom filled with children's books about Native culture and language. Every year, my students will be able to check out books and take them home. I will encourage my students to read these books to their younger family members. I believe this will help with reading levels of their siblings, maybe develop a love for reading, help them learn about their culture and other Native cultures, and get my teen students more involved with their families. I hope to obtain, books and materials needed to make my project and class successful.
