Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are wonderful, curious, and creative 7th graders at an urban, Title I public middle school. This means that all students at my site receive free breakfast and lunch through the federally funded Free or Reduced Price Lunch Program.

I teach a wide range of students with diverse talents and needs ranging from Special Needs to Gifted education and everything in between.

Our student body is very diverse and a reflection of the multicultural community we inhabit. 65% of our students are Hispanic and the other 35% are classified as African-American, Pacific Islander, Filipino, Asian, Indochinese, Native American, White and mixed race students. They are excited to become stronger readers and writers this year.

My Project

Our current sharpeners are starting to fall apart, and we are in need of some new ones.

My students brainstorm, try out new writing techniques and write story ideas in their notebooks.

They love a pencil with a good point- nothing is worse than a dull pencil, right? Shockingly, this is not a supply furnished by our school.

In my seventh grade classroom, I support a variety of students with different learning styles and preferences. Writing using pencil and paper is one of the choices that some of my students make. My students have told me that writing with a pencil helps them to slow down and really think about what they are creating.
