My students need Time For Kids magazines so they're able to learn about current events, phonics games so they're able to improve their reading levels, and new books so that our classroom library ready for readers!
My goal is to foster a love of learning while helping my students make necessary reading growth and gain critical thinking capabilities. Last year many of my students showed exceptional determination and many showed transformational growth based on the end-of-year assessment. This year I would like to increase this growth by ensuring that more students reach their growth goals, as well as put an emphasis on cultivating a genuine interest in the world around them.
For many of my third graders, school is the safest, most positive place they can be.
In our classroom, they are able to temporarily forget about the potentially volatile circumstances of their home lives and immerse themselves in reading, writing, and learning. My boys and girls are resilient, spirited, and most of all--curious! They are hungry for new knowledge and opportunities. Please help me feed this curiosity with current magazines, books, and supplies for our classroom library and small group reading instruction!
My Project
I’m spending my summer teaching a reading boot camp for 15 of my soon-to-be third graders. We’ve made progress and started to alter some negative attitudes about reading, but we still have a long way to go.
My students start the year independently reading at various levels—some are not yet reading while others are fluently reading fifth grade material.
To ensure every child leaves the classroom with increased opportunities, we focus on urgently bettering our reading levels through individual progress, as well as drawing thoughtful conclusions about the information we attain from texts.
Because my students all have different literacy needs, a large portion of class time is spent in small groups. While I teach one group, the other students are working on reading and writing in groups, pairs, or independently. The books and magazines I’ve requested will be put to use during the Independent Reading Center, and they can also be checked out if students finish early. Our school does not utilize a library time to check out books, and while there is a public library nearby, it is unsafe to walk there. Therefore, our classroom library gets a lot of use, and nothing makes me happier than when students ask to take home our books. (Because of this, we need a TON of titles.) The workbooks and games will be used during the Word Work Center. Using games is an engaging way to have readers practice a spelling pattern in a way that does not FEEL like learning. Having quality materials at these centers helps to ensure that these students are engaged so that I can better focus on the group of students with me!
