Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students do not like to read. This is partly due to them being teens and not being at their grade level reading. Most books they are able to read are "baby" books. You can help change that with donating to get them high interest level books they are interested in and can read.

My students are 5th-8th grade teen students with learning disabilities.

We are a rural school and most students are in free or reduced lunch. We are comprised of 196 K-8th grade students. All of my students have challenges above and beyond their learning disabilities. They are latch key kids with responsibilities of watching their younger siblings when they get home and are being raised by either their grandparents or other relatives. Each one knows they challenges they face on a daily basis but many of them do not let that hinder their willingness to work. With being in a rural area there is not any type of afterschool activities with the exception of school sports for them to do. The nearest city for that is several miles away and they usually do not have means to get there. They are still able to keep positive attitudes, stay out of trouble, and find things to do to keep themselves occupied.

My Project

These books will greatly impact my students in a positive way. First, they are teen level books which will keep their interest. Second, some are high interest low reading level books. This means that they will be able to read them on a lower reading level but still have the book be interesting so my student still wants to read them. Third, the more the read and are successful at it, the better readers they will become. The better readers they become the more likelihood of them going into regular education. Fourth, they will be able to do verbal and written book reports on what they have read. This will help their memory, written expression skills and their presentation skills.

This will help my students by giving them better reading skills.

It will increase their self-esteem by having books that are interesting and at their reading level. They will help increase their reading abilities which will help with their other classes that require reading. Most of all, these books will help my students graduate from Special Education to regular education and give them more opportunities in the future.
