Hi. I teach English and Journalism to a wonderfully diverse group of seventh and eighth graders at a public school. The best thing about my students is the way they embrace their differences while celebrating their individuality. That’s why I love to see their creativity in the classroom. They come up with so many things I could never have thought of!
Your donations will help my students share their work in the best possible way.
We don’t qualify for most funding opportunities within our district, which go where the need is greater. We have good basic technology, including a class set of chromebooks. But doing your work on the computer leaves one big hole: there’s nothing to post in the classroom!
Students need to be able to post their work, to see what their classmates are doing, and to have that wonderful experience of saying, “This is what I did.” This is a vital part of the process, both for learning and for expressing yourself with confidence. I love seeing students create and share something that’s clever, or crazy, or both. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!
My Project
This request combines two items. The computer is for my Journalism class. Currently we publish our school newspaper online, using a standard layout provided by our web host. This is great, because it means we can include lots more articles. Now we want to add a printed version, which we can post around school and share with more of our student body. With the Mac Mini, my Journalism students will learn the basics of page layout and design, while allowing us to feature our work much more widely around the campus.
The color laser printer will benefit all my students.
In addition to using it for our newspaper print edition, my English classes will use it for a number of our favorite projects. For example, students create a fictional product, and then make an advertisement for that product. This assignment is always a highlight—it's so great to see how much creativity students pour into their work. And we do a cross-domain project where students create a promotional brochure for a company that offers time-travel vacations to visit events they have studied in History class.
Both these assignments produce work that looks great on screen but weak in black and white, and often the readability suffers. A color laser printer will let me print my students' work so it looks its very best.
