Help me give my students an i-Pad activity station that will help promote sight-reading notes on the staff, small group piano instruction, composition activities, listening activities and games to help identify different musical elements.
Help my students read, write, and respond to music! There are many user-friendly games and apps available only on iOS that will allow my students to enhance their note-reading skills, receive adaptive piano, ukulele, and guitar instruction, compose music, and collaborate on recording music.
In order to accomplish more small group instruction in the classroom, I'm implementing "station days" throughout the year.
I already have a classroom set of ukuleles, enough guitars for a small group, and my community generously raised enough money for me to have 1:1 electric pianos for each student in the classroom. After whole-group instruction to teach the basics, I plan on having a permanent i-Pad station in my room where students can play games like Staff Wars, Treble Cat, and other adaptive, sequential games that reinforce note-reading and musical fluency. These iPads can also serve as recording stations where students can compose and collaborate with one another, as well as listening stations where students can listen to and easily record their responses to music.
While students do have 1:1 Chromebooks at the school, it can be very cumbersome for them to bring them to specialist classes from their homerooms and have each student sign in, and there are very few Chrome extensions that can achieve the same goals as the music games and apps available on iOS. Another benefit will be that many will seek out similar activities on their own devices at home after enjoying them at school. As all educators know, spaced repetition is key to learn a skill! As a specialist that only sees students twice a week, any work outside the classroom is golden.
