Orff instruments have removeable keys so younger children can be taught one interval at a time! With music, it’s important to feel successful from the beginning. The youngest start with notes that sound pleasant together - 3rds, 4ths, 5ths. After learning these intervals, the first scale students learn is the pentatonic scale (Do, Re, Fa, So, La) because any order you play them in sounds nice. To Western ears, many of these melodies sound Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, but rock and blues use this scale as well.) As students become better and better at following directions, imitating rhythms, and reading notes, the teacher adds one note at a time until the students are playing with a full diatonic scale (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Di, Do). With a good foundation on Orff instruments, students can read music and are ready by the 4th and 5th grade to play and sing in school ensembles as well as pursue pitched instruments like the piano on their own.
