My Students

My students WANT to learn and to understand science. Science has a tendency to be a subject that some students view as "too difficult." I hope to change that stigma and to inspire scientists out of my 7th graders.

It is my personal belief that all kids want to learn.

For the past 4 years, my school's 7th grade science state test scores have resulted in 1 student scoring Advanced, and 12 scoring Proficient. All the rest have scored Basic or Below Basic. My students need to learn science in a way that is hands-on and interesting - they need to be engaged. My school resides in the 4th poorest city in the nation, and I do not wish to burden parents by requesting numerous creative materials from them. My goal is to have 80% of my 7th grade students scoring Proficient or Advanced on their state test at the end of 2016, but it is my belief that I need these materials in order to do so.

My Project

Interactive notebooks are considered revolutionary in teaching science to students. Interactive notebooks are structured so that the teacher's notes are given on the right side of the notebook, and then the students translate the notes given to them into their own words through pictures, song lyrics, poems, or metaphors onto the left side of their notebooks. This allows for students to be engaged and interested in their learning; this process invites students to take ownership over the material and relate it to their own lives. These notebooks are highly personalized, and I will encourage complete creativity and openness. The resources that I hope will be donated will allow my students to go above and beyond in their quest for knowledge and understanding of science, as well as allowing them to have a space that is just their own to demonstrate their creativity. My students need construction paper, scissors, colored pencils, glue sticks, construction paper, and notebooks.

By donating to this project, you will make a huge difference in the way that my students learn.

Interactive notebooks allow for students who learn kinesthetically, linearly, spatially, ect. to arrange and understand their notes the way that THEY choose. In this way, I hope that my students will learn not to fear science, but to love it and to enjoy it.
