Frederick Douglass said. "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free". At the high school level, keeping students reading is our goal -- so in addition to personal freedom, they will be educated, productive members of society who can think, infer, problem solve, and empathize.
I teach high school freshmen, who are making a transition to young adulthood.
They are energetic, ready to learn, and very attached to their technology. Most of my students have access to reading resources outside of school, but there are those who do not and rely on my classroom and our school library for texts.
My Project
Books are magic, and I want my students to love reading and learn that it is essential to our careers and our culture. I want them to understand reading is also an amazing form of relaxation. The books I have requested will be used for independent reading time and for literature circles. In both situations, students will be able to choose the book they would like to read, which will help them connect to the text and make it more meaningful.
The books I have chosen will improve my classroom by giving my students choices in their reading and allow them to take ownership in their learning.
Instead of only having district-selected texts, there will be a variety of age-appropriate books across multiple genres.
