I teach a 5th grade Special Education class at PS 111 in Queens, NY. I started teaching in December and walked into a class with very low level readers. Most of my students read on a 1st or 2nd grade reading level. I want so much to teach them to read on a 5th grade level, but the only books in my classroom are either too easy for them or much too hard. Every day I ask administrators for books they can read. The days have come and gone and no new books have arrived.
Most of my students speak only Spanish at home and don't have the chance to read Enlish books in a comfortable, homey environment. My dream is to create that environment for them in our classroom. I want to be able to invite them to get lost in books. I would like a new comfortable rug: the rug we currently have is old and dusty. My Paraprofessional and I do our best to keep this rug clean but a few of our students have severe asthma which prevents them from feeling comfortable sitting on it.
I would like to have books for my students to read on their level. The books that are available to them now are either not helping to challenge their minds or are so hard they're afraid to keep trying. If we could have a new library of about 75 books, I would be able to keep my students' learning at a steady pace so they could see their own progress.
Your help would be so greatly appreciated. These books would not only be used in my class but in the other 5th grade classes as well. PS 111 is a school with a close knit teacher community. We do our best to share every resource we have with one another. These new books and supplies would greatly improve the learning environment for many children in years to come.
