My students come to our engineering program for a variety of reasons - for example, a love of math or science or an affinity for building. However, what unites them is a thirst for learning and an appreciation for solving problems. Hands on learning and troubleshooting provides them with an opportunity to apply their knowledge and extend their learning through real world situations, which in turn allows for optimal retention.
The real process of education should be the process of learning to think through the application of real problems.~ John Dewey
Providing students with opportunities to problem solve is at the core of our pre-engineering program. Over the course of four years, my students are immersed in problem-based learning projects, where they construct knowledge through experimentation with robotics, electronics, CAD modeling and more - hands-on learning that they love! In this capstone course, my students are charged with defining their own human-centered problem and developing and delivering a unique solution. This is the ultimate problem-based learning project. The opportunity to manage their own project and experience failure and success through trial and error is a very meaningful and enduring learning experience for them.
My Project
Microcontrollers offer students endless hands-on opportunities to experiment with sensors, actuators and coding to develop the critical thinking and problem solving skills of tomorrow’s leaders.
In today’s world, interactivity and intelligence is at the center of most new products.
By adding microcontrollers and interactivity to their prototypes, students will have opportunities to extend their knowledge and expand the range of their projects. Arduino microcontrollers offer students endless opportunities to sense and control objects so that they can create prototypes in sync with their view of our increasingly physical world. The microcontrollers and supplemental materials will become an investment in our students’ as well as our program’s futures.
Students learn best when they learn through doing. What better way to learn than to see the fruits of your labors come alive? These donations will allow our students to take ownership of their education and elevate their projects to a higher level so that they will be proud to share them with our school community, industry advisors and family and friends.
