Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

KIPP San Francisco Bay Academy is an urban charter middle school that currently serves 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students. This is our third year in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco, where we are committed to having an impact. Our mission, like the mission of all KIPP schools, is to prepare our students for top quality high schools, college, and the competitive world beyond. Preparation begins in 5th grade, and students work hard everyday from 7:30 - 5pm, for three weeks in the summer, and every other Saturday so that they can compete with their more privileged peers in affluent communities. As our 7th graders approach high school,we are faced with finding them excellent high schools to attend where they will continue on the college track. Our students will be applying for top private schools and boarding schools, and will all need financial assistance. One major criterion for merit based aid and scholarships at top high schools is demonstrated excellence on a high school entrance examination. Our students will be taking the SSAT and ISEE (Independent Schools Entrance Examination) in the spring of their 7th grade year, and fall of their 8 grade year. This test will play a major role in determining acceptance to top schools and financial assistance and rewards. The affluent students they will be competing with have access to test prep materials, classes tutors, and on-line resources. It is only fair that our students, whose families can't afford extras, have the same opportunities for extra practice. As the Director of High School Preparation and Placement, I am beginning a test prep class for our 7th graders twice per week. In attempts to level the playing field, I am requesting 23 test prep books for the test prep class. These books include diagnostic tests, tips, exercises, and 4 practice tests. The staff will be able to diagnose weaknesses, strategize, and give feedback to individuals about their strengths and weaknesses. Our students have been coming to school for 10 hours a day since 5th grade, but won't be admitted to quality high schools without excellent test scores. They deserve to be as prepared as their more privileged peers, with whom they are competing. Getting an excellent high school education opens the door for college admissions and scholarships.
