The Memory Project is an initiative in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world who have been orphaned, neglected, or disadvantaged.
Given that kids in such situations usually have few personal keepsakes, the purpose of the portraits is to provide them with a special memory of their youth and to help honor their self identity.
The project also allows art students to practice kindness, empathy, and service to others. My students go to an urban school where like everywhere else supplies and resources are in short supply. What isn't in short supply is their enthusiasm and motivation to help others. My high school 2-d design class have been practicing their art skills by creating self-portraits. They are looking forward to using their skills to create portraits for children who are less fortunate. I can teach these students how to create a realistic portrait, but my students want to take their skills a step farther to create a project that will have a lasting positive effect on the world.
My art students are committed to this effort. My students are prepared to create portraits for 22 kids on the Memory Project's waiting list who are from Ethiopia. We are currently seeking sponsors to support this initiative, as the Memory Project asks for $15 per portrait to coordinate their international delivery. By sponsoring a portrait you will not only be helping my wonderful art students to practice reaching out and helping others but you will also enable them to make a connection with other children from an entirely different culture. This project really is a great example of "paying it forward". The entire process of receiving the photos of the kids, creating the portraits, delivering the portraits and then receiving a photo and a video of their child receiving the portrait they created will be a memory that my students will cherish forever.
With your generous donations, this will be the fourth year that my Graphic Design classes have been able to participate in The Memory Project.
They have created portraits for children in Nepal, Ghana, Thailand and now Ethiopia. This project is always the highlight of their year. My students literally clap, shout and jump out of their chairs when they watch the video of "their" children receiving the portraits they created. Thank you for your support!!
