This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need more exposure to the wonderful world of reading that books can provide. Many of my students are English Language Learners who are still trying to grasp the language of their new country. They are eager to learn and I am trying to build on that interest by introducing them to more books and book series. Another group of my students have grown up in this country but have never had any positive feelings attached to reading. Many of them are special education students with learning disabilities that see reading as something that needs to be tolerated. They are the stereotypical, reluctant readers who have to be pulled kicking and screaming to the classroom library. The majority of my students are reading below grade level.

My students need more exposure to books that are high interest and low level that appeal to middle school students.

My students have wonderful personalities but they are less than engaged when it comes to reading. My motto is "If you don't like reading, you haven't been introduced to the right book". Right now, I need help in getting the right books into the hands of my students.

My Project

It's been proven that students will be more engaged in reading if they can find captivating characters to read about or a favorite book series to hold their interest. I need to add more book series to my classroom library to hold the interest of struggling and special needs students who are reading below grade level. Studies have shown that the most important thing you can do to improve your reading level is to read as much as possible. In order to inspire my students to do that, I need to add books to my classroom library that are high interest and low reading levels for middle school students.

I work at a Title One school, which means the majority of my students cannot afford to go to Barnes & Noble to buy their own books.

Many of them struggle just to able to buy school supplies at the beginning of the year. By giving a donation, you would giving them a chance to explore a whole new world that only reading can bring. Please help my students to become better readers.
