This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English at a continuation school. My students are comprised of juniors and seniors, with those who are behind in credits, as well as those who are trying to graduate early. Because many of our students face daunting challenges outside of the classroom, we focus on helping students find their strengths and encourage their success, while also fostering a safe place where students can work on their social-emotional health as well as their academics.

My Project

While most students in a continuation school are not fond of taking books home, students will have the option to as one will be checked out to each student, allowing students the opportunity to get caught up or get ahead. Having a copy of the book will allow students to practice analytical skills like annotations, development of theme, and character growth. As many of our students come from disadvantaged home lives and face oppression due to racial and socio-economic situations, their ability to relate to Elie Wiesel’s memoir will help them buy in to this part of their education.
