I teach in a rural school district where we focus on rigor and literacy with high expectations for all students.
When my sixth graders walk into my classroom, they know that I will challenge them, but they also know that it's okay to make mistakes.
They also know that my classroom is the safest place to make those mistakes as long as they learn from them.
My students are actively engaged every day in interactive lessons which enrich their learning and accommodate their different learning styles.
My students leave my classroom feeling successful in some area, whether it be geometry, algebra, or the dreaded fractions. The ultimate goal I have for my students at the end of the year is that they leave with a respect and love for mathematics.
My Project
While they're middle schoolers now, sixth graders still require lots of movement to expend all the energy they have! I have noticed that it is more difficult for eleven and twelve year olds to remain seated and comfortable throughout math class. I have found research and articles about "Flexible Seating" within the classroom. This allows students to choose their own seating with many seating options each time they come to my classroom. Research shows that students tend to take more responsibility for their time in class, they stay on task, and work hard in order to keep this privilege. I implemented some flexible seating in my classroom last school year by allowing students to bring in their own seating. However, having set locations for seating and more seating will allow for each of my students to participate.
If this project is funded it will allow my students to have the opportunity to experience full flexible seating in a safe and engaging math class.
I already have a layout and each of the items requested will fit beautifully in my classroom. The rugs will allow for more group work and collaboration on the floor. The bungee chairs, Big Joe Chairs, and the stools will give students multiple options on what type of seat they choose in my class and can change daily. The bungee chairs also help students who are ADHD and provide them movement while in class that is not distracting to others. The mobile whiteboard will allow me to rotate around the room and provide small group instruction. The 10 drawer organizer cart will provide extra storage that is mobile and more accessible to students. It will hold instructional materials such as math manipulatives, paper, scissors, pencils, etc that will easily move around the room.
