Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are located in the heart of a large, urban neighborhood. The majority of students are of Hispanic ethnicity (74.0%) and also classify within a high poverty rate (79.9%) The poverty rate is the concentration of students enrolled at the school who qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meals Program.
Teaching science, it is essential that students receive a comprehensive based experience where they are doing "hands-on" tactile activities.
A lot of my students have thus far not conducted many laboratory investigations, using actual science instruments as an analytical balance, graduated cylinder or hot plates.
The funding of this project will allow my students to conduct real chemistry inquiry based labs. They will determine the actual acidity of beverages or separate a dye mixture using chromatography. They will also be able to calculate the rate of decomposition of calcium carbonate as well as design an actual hand warmer!
