My Students

Turn my students into geniuses! It is hard to find a novel that high school students can truly connect to, but this is it.

Our school is in southern California at one of the most diverse and populated high schools.

My students speak many different languages and represent many different cultures. They struggle with reading and need new novels that they can connect to.

My Project

One of the California state standards for high school students is to write autobiographical narratives. This is a challenge because my students do not feel inspired or courageous enough to write in their own voice about their own experiences. The novel Burro Genius by Victor Villasenor is just the example they need. I have used it before when I taught at another high school, and the students read every word with excitement and anticipation.

Help my students find the courage to write about their own experiences.
