My students need two gel electrophoresis chambers for biotechnology labs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love Biology! This is a feeling that I strive to foster in all of my students as they learn about cells, the diversity of life, physiology, animal behavior, ecology, genetics, and develop their math skills. Labs provide the real-life experiences necessary to comprehend these biology topics.
My students are from a high-poverty, high-risk area of Southern California.
Our student population is 96% Hispanic/Latino and 81% participate in the Free or Reduced-Price Lunch Program. Despite the economic challenges that many of my students face, they are eager to learn and persevere. It is their dream to graduate from high school and be the first in their family to attend college.
This is the third year that my school offers Advanced Placement Biology. We are still in the early phase of acquiring the necessary equipment and supplies for this AP STEM course. Most of my students are 10th graders and their enthusiasm for science is impressive! They are extremely committed to the class. They attend frequent study sessions and complete hours of weekly homework to develop their minds. With engaging lab experiences we can continue to fuel their passion and creativity!
My Project
Advancements in biotechnology have led to amazing and beneficial discoveries - human insulin from bacteria, pest resistant corn, and crime scene investigation using DNA sequencing are just a few examples. My students could be the future scientists that change the world. Unfortunately, genetics is challenging for many students because this topic is dense with technical vocabulary and concepts.
I want to ensure my students are knowledgeable in this field by exposing them to authentic experiences of genetic technology, rather than just paper models. Currently, our school has one gel electrophoresis chamber for 27-30 students in one class period. This is not enough to complete the necessary labs. This grant will allow me to begin acquiring the vital equipment that is too expensive for my school to purchase.
My students will really benefit from using a gel electrophoresis chamber.
The knowledge my students gain through this authentic study of genetics will fully prepare them for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Since I also teach non-AP Biology, all of my Biology students will be able to benefit from having this equipment.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
