Help My Staff Get Techy with Our Science Selves

My Students

My classroom is a buzzing place full of budding scientists. It a place where curiosity rules and students are begging for new ways to "do" science and the technology that science can incorporate. You will see diversity with students sharing their various backgrounds and stories.

I have taught for 14 years in K-5th grade.

I have taught at very low income schools. Merging science and technology have been a passion of mine since I started teaching. I started my career using the overhead projector and am now looking at using technology like 3D printers and digital microscope. I am emerging as a teacher leader and would like to begin leading my school and district in technology integration with science. I love how science can turn a shy kiddo into a chatter box, ignite passion in students and help them see they have a future in a science or engineering profession. I am thankful I am a teacher and can not see myself ever not in the classroom with students. My career so far has been able to make it so I am a GLAD trainer for our district, and also am on our district's science committee that is looking at how to incorporate the Next Gen standards district wide.

My Project

With the books, I plan on picking out which book would be the best to lead a book study on for my school with a focus on integrating science and technology. My staff has a passion for science and a passion for technology so this is the perfect merge. By having the 3 D printer I can start to feel comfortable with new technology and help immerse my colleagues in ideas of how to use this with students. I am really passionate about having students create their own designs, and the printer will help with this. The digital microscope will be another way to help integrate science and technology. I plan to lead a book study with one of these 3 books over the spring and into summer with my staff and eventually with my district's science committee.

This project will help build my capacity as a presenter in school leadership around science and engineering integration with technology.

I am hoping it will start to cause a ripple in my staff which turns into a wave of passion for science and technology for my schools' students. This opportunity will help expand our students potential by exposing them to science and technology. Most importantly, it will allow my teachers and students to be able to see the possibility of what they can do or be.
