Help My Sophomores Love Reading!

My students need 15 copies of Sherman Alexie's novel "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian".

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. McNulty's classroom raised $311

I teach 10th grade World Literature in an inner-city high school. I am fortunate to have accumulated a large classroom library - over 600 books, now - that I use to engage my students and to expand their horizons. At the end of the day - no matter how challenging our environment, and no matter how terrifying the circumstances my students leave to come to school daily - I've learned that the key to engaging my students is teaching powerful and engaging stories. Although I have copies of many literary staples available, I am looking to make more diverse books - books that will give my students new perspectives on the world around them - available. Over the summer, I found a book I needed to teach: Sherman Alexie's "Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian." I come from South Dakota, so I've got perspective on Native American culture and reservation life. My students lack that perspective, and I think it is a shame that our "World Literature" curriculum doesn't teach my students about different cultures living within our own nation. Sherman Alexie's novel, then, is a perfect fit for both the course I teach and the students I reach. Told from the perspective of a teenage Native American male, Alexie's book unfolds an engaging and witty story that will draw even my most reluctant readers in. This book is at the perfect level for my lower level students - many of whom are male; the book is told by a young man who is almost exactly the same age as my students. Reading his stories will be engaging for many of my students, and will give them a wonderful choice for their end of year group reading project. Conversely, this unit is only as successful as the novels that my students read are engaging. Having 15 copies of Sherman Alexie's novel will enable 15 of my struggling readers to feel the pride that comes with reading a novel cover to cover - an experience few have had prior to this year. Your donation will allow me to introduce my students to a part of the world they might never see otherwise - a part of the world that exists right here in the United States. Moreover, you will help my students experience the joy and challenge of reading a well-written novel. Thanks for helping my students love reading!
