My Project

I teach wonderful and talented students who are learning how to become scientists in my class. They are intelligent and dedicated, but about 89% of the students I teach come from a low socioeconomic background and struggle to afford school supplies. I try to provide basic supplies through the school budget (lined paper and 3-ring binders) and my own pocket (golf pencils, eraser tops, folders, mechanical pencil lead), but school budget cuts mean our science department's funds are stretched thin and this is too large an expense for me to pay out of my own pocket.

A class set of scientific calculators would mean my students have reliable access to the tools they need to make sense of science lab results and practice with one of the most common calculators they will encounter in standardized tests.

Calculators are essential to convert the mass and times of marbles moving through paper roller coasters into circular motion results, or to use pH results to find a reaction equilibrium. They can also use them during tests when they cannot use calculator apps on their phones or laptops. This also ensures my students are familiar and comfortable with using the most common types of calculators used on the SAT and AP exams.
