Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My educational philosophy is that every child deserves a quality education, regardless of where he or she grows up. I work in the poorest Congressional district in the country, and our school's budget is not enough for the needs of our students. I teach 7th grade English-Language Arts in a small middle school.
We are a school which strives to keep our students motivated and inspired to learn.
Currently, there are a number of students at our school who are reading below grade level. In an effort to boost student performance in reading, our school has implemented LLI, or Leveled Literacy Intervention created by Fountas & Pinnell. LLI is a small group, supplementary literacy intervention for students who find reading and writing difficult. On a typical day, 3-4 LLI students, who are similar enough in reading competency, engage in reading and comprehension activities with the support of an instructor.
My Project
One of the major roles of the LLI instructor is to help their students pick out books at their reading levels, and the book the student chooses should be one that they actually like. While this is extremely helpful in boosting the students’ reading levels, it is not enough for those students who just don’t like to read daily. With that being said, I decided to reward scholars with prizes like bookmarks, stress balls, and fancy pencils for each book they complete as a means to motivate the students and keep them motivated. However, there are over one hundred students who receive Leveled Literacy Intervention, and I do not have the financial means to reward every single student for each time they finish a book.
I believe all students can be Reading Stars; some just need a little spark to help rocket them into space.
