This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are Second Graders at a Title 1 school in Baltimore City which means that all of my kids get free/reduced lunch. This project would reach over 50 kids that WANT to read! Yes, you read that right! They WANT to read! I have never met a group of kids more eager to pick up a book throughout the day or try to sneak a chapter in their desk during a lesson.
"Miss D, can we read for one more minute or just one more chapter?" That has been the most asked question at the end of the school day.
Just like my kids, I have been doing some reading too! Did you know research shows that kids are more motivated to read if they see characters that reflect them and their experiences? It builds their critical literacy skills! Did you know research shows that kids are more likely to read if a book is a part of a series that they can keep on reading? This helps them draw connections across texts. After doing some research, I want to extend my library to reflect the kids in my classroom and to keep their love of reading alive!
My Project
I have been supplying anywhere between 5-10 new books each month for my kids because they have been constantly reading and rereading them. I have chosen books that they have shown great interest in in the hopes to keep them reading. Unfortunately, with graduate school costs, I am now looking for some help!
My kids have created an Amazon Book Wishlist and many of the books listed above are on it!
My kids have realized that they can learn new things from books, help me keep the spirit of reading alive in our classroom! These books will keep my students' love of reading alive and will help them connect to the characters (sometimes real people) they read about. They will keep my students engaged and their love of reading alive.
