Build Word Families, Words, and Sentences! I am a basic skills teacher at a Recovery School in New Orleans. I service students that are "at risk." "At risk" students are students that are at least 1-2 grade levels below average. Since many of our students missed a year of school due to the devastation of Katrina, the number of "at risk" students has increased. I am currently teaching students who are severely behind in reading. This task is difficult due to the lack of adequate resources. The "Linking Language Cubes Instant Center" includes 4 different centers. Since my students are all on different levels this package is perfect. The 4 centers include word families, sentence building, letter sounds and building words. Each center includes 6 student packs, each with 36 cubes, plus a 32-page teacher's guide with lessons and reproducibles. These centers target standards in the following areas: -Identifying onsets and rimes -Initial phoneme substitution -Spelling Patterns -Decoding -Sentence Structure These centers are great for my kinesthetic and visual learners because they are actually building words and sentences. My students learn best by doing and I am confident that this tactile center will prove to be effective with my students. I would use the Linking Language Cubes Instant Center daily with my students in a small group instruction. I will also copy activities from the teachers guide so that my students can practice what they learned at home.
