As a second year teacher in a high poverty/low income school district my students and I have to work together to overcome quite a few obstacles that should not have to be a part of a junior high child's life. I am looking to help take away from their out-of-school problems by providing them with a nurturing, stable and comfortable environment in my classroom.
These students are hard working, spunky and extremely hopeful to come to school and have an adult acknowledge them and their hard work; and it is my dream to get each and every one of them to enjoy reading!
I may not be able to change their home lives or what they do outside of school, but I do have control over how they are treated, act and the environment they are a part of in my classroom. Which I hope will encourage and develop their love for learning, reading and their self-esteem throughout their academic careers.
My Project
Each year I have to work extremely hard to make reading fun for my students, especially when working with low level readers in a literacy intervention. By the time my students roll into 7th grade, most of them have already made their mind up about reading. They constantly tell me that they either "love" or "hate" reading and it breaks my heart to hear students say they "hate" reading. I am especially hearing this from my low level readers because my range of books to choose from to use with them is very limited. In order to combat this I have been hunting for high level interest books for my low level readers to use during our intervention.
Help me fight to instill the love for reading with my low level readers!
Having multiple sets of high interest books for my low level readers will not only help me win the fight of making reading fun with my 7th and 8th grade students, but it will also help the students have more of a choice with their reading selection during our intervention. I learned very quickly in my teaching career that to win over the students attention I have to be able to supply them with books that interest them, and the hardest part is that the label "interesting" changes with each new set of students.
By providing your help, you will not only be supplying resources to a low-income district, but also helping spread the joy of discovering an interesting book and reviving the love for reading in a group of students who I thought that the love might have been lost.
