Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school’s mission is to help students understand and be prepared for College or Career after High School. Most of our students are first-generation and struggle with language barriers. Our English Language Development class struggles with acquiring materials that would benefit our students' growth both academically and socially. As the only English Language Development teacher in the High School, I often purchase books and materials for students to expand past the textbook. The textbook does not connect sometimes, and in order to have the buy-in of the students I need something to attract their attention.
Many of my students are Long Term English Learners, and it is my hope for them in growing their communication skills and literacy skills, so they can pass this class and apply these skills to their everyday life.
Social-emotional learning plays a big part in getting these students to communicate effectively. Giving my students games and allowing them to communicate, while focusing on strategy or a common goal, helps them to build their communication skills without thinking about it. This will help immensely with our new student from Ukraine who often has trouble talking with the rest of the students because their native language is Spanish.
The Diary of Anne Frank will be read as a class. I want them to attempt reading out loud, discussing ideas, and writing a journal. The big post-it boards will be used to create gallery walks and jigsaw learning activities. I want to encourage hands-on opportunities and really give each student a chance to showcase their skills. It is essential that they gain confidence in their skills through discussion, social interaction, and writing. Providing the right materials to engage students and support their growth is essential to their success.
