This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In first grade, the world of reading starts to unfold around you. All of a sudden, the words around you start to make sense and a whole new world is open to you. It is an amazing time in a child's education and as a teacher, it is inspiring to see kids start making sense of the words around them.
My classroom is full of eager 1st graders, who are growing readers!
They love to read the world around them and work hard to improve their reading skills everyday. Our school is in an urban environment, with a tremendous school and neighborhood community. Our staff, administrators, parents, and community members work together to provide the best education possible to our hard working and dedicated students.
My Project
In this project, I have requested three literacy center kits that focus on the common core skills for first grade. These center activities range from hands on materials to work done on a listening center so that kids with different learning styles can find a medium that works best for them. These materials will be used during centers, which is a time of the day when students work in small groups on skills at their level so that they may become better readers. These center kits focus on phonics and comprehension skills to help students decode the words they read and then help them understand what they have read.
As a first grade teacher, one of my main priorities is to help my students develop a strong foundation in reading and writing.
I hope to encourage my students to love reading for knowledge and pleasure. I wish to instill in them thirst for reading that carries them into the future. I believe that these literacy centers will help my students improve their reading and comprehension skills so they can become avid readers.
