Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids need books that match their personalities. I teach a fourth grade class in a high-need area of New York. My kids are a goofy, fun-loving bunch but the books in my classroom are antiquated and falling apart. The kids often complain to me that reading them is boring. They can't continue to feel this way about reading! Our situation especially breaks my heart because almost two thirds of my class read below grade level. These kids need motivation.
To remedy this, I have selected a list of books with intriguing titles and plots that I know will catch my students' interest. The titles may raise some eyebrows but the important thing is that they will get my kids reading. What fourth grader wouldn't want to read "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid", "Scary Stories to Chill Your Bones", or a book called, "The Day My Butt Went Psycho"? (I'm sure your inner child is just as excited as mine)
I have started to buy some books with my own money but I just can't afford what I need to keep all thirty of my kids excited about reading throughout the year. That is why I am calling on you to help turn my class library around.
The sooner this money is raised, the sooner these books get shipped to my school. It is my sincere belief that your help can change not only the way my children feel about reading, but also the way they feel about themselves. Thank you.
