My students need copies of the 2015 Rhode Island Children's Book Award nominees. They need copies of books such as Bats, Nelson Mandela, The Blessing Cup and many more.

My Students
They may be under 18, but my students are able to vote in one state election - the Rhode Island Children's Book Award (RICBA! The nominees were just announced, and many kids want to start reading now ... but we don't have most of the titles in our libraries.
I am the librarian for two elementary schools, both filled with creative, fun kids who like to read.
When I arrived in the district last year, I increased the number of books they're allowed to check out to "as many as you can carry and keep track of." Circulation jumped from about 5,000 items/year to 7,000 at one school and nearly 9,000 at the other. I love when a book finds a champion, and word-of-mouth leads to a long holds list.
However, keeping the libraries stocked with new material is a challenge. Our (small) district orders don't come in until August. That's months away! My students want to start reading the RICBA nominees now.
My Project
To qualify to vote in the RICBA election, students in grades 3-6 must read at least three nominees ... some try to read all 20! The list encompasses a wide range of genres and styles, getting kids to try out types of books they wouldn't usually read.
This year, I'd like to set up a way for the kids at my two schools to communicate with each other about what they're reading and create campaigns for the books they'd like to win. But they can't do that without having the books in our collections.
Providing the RICBA nominees to my students will help them participate in a statewide activity while getting an introduction to literary criticism.
They are excited to have the chance to influence the outcome of an election ... please help get them the opportunity to vote!
