Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Humanities teacher at a school that has been teaching "at-risk" students in a successful learning environment for 10 years. High percentages of our students enter high school performing below state averages in math and reading, but leave our school admitted to city and state colleges.
This year, we have begun to give the kids more choice over the books they read. The results have been inspiring. Kids who rarely enjoyed class or completed a book are now finishing their second or third choice book. Recently a student that I had last year came to talk to me about a book she borrowed from my current student. She asked me: "Why didn't we have choice like this?"
The answer to this question is resources. My kids have little resources and very few have books in their own homes. I want to give my kids the opportunity to read anything they want, but my school cannot afford to buy every book.
In this grant, I talked to kids about what they were interested in reading and mixed their suggestions with recommended Young Adult novels. These books include Prinz Award books and other notable novels that will challenge my kids. Most of all, they will make my kids excited about reading.
Thank you.
