Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach music in an inner city public school that services a large number of young children in Pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade. Within our building we have 41 different classes and anywhere from 700 to 900 children depending on the time of year and world events. We are known as a "sanctuary city" and a "getaway school" because we serve a community that is primarily made up of recent immigrants to the United States.
My students are a beautiful picture of diversity with families from all over the world.
Chelsea Public Schools’ mission statement is to “Welcome and Educate,” and my colleges do superhuman work to help each individual child get the support and love they need. Every student has their own story and some of them can break your heart. In spite of any challenges my little ones might be facing they come to school every day with excitement, joy, creativity, and music their hearts. Giving my first graders a chance to learn the Ukulele will open up a world of possibilities and help to instill a lifelong love of music.
My Project
We need your help to clean up the air in our music room so my kids can breath and sing easy. I am asking for a professional quality HEPA filter and air purifier for my classroom to help filter our environmental pollution and minimize the spread of germs in my very young and vulnerable population.
The air quality in Chelsea is always between moderately bad to full blow unhealthy.
Our city is located under the flight path for Boston’s Logan airport and there are constantly planes flying low overhead. The Daily Mail reported a US study that suggested “exposure to carbon monoxide from planes may have impact on health.” And that "People who live within six miles of an airport have higher levels of asthma and heart problems," The entire city of Chelsea is within 2 miles of the airport and the rates of asthma and allergies in my students reflect that fact.
My classroom also has an unexplained abundance of dust which only serves to further aggravate my students breathing. The HEPA filter I am asking for could filter out almost all (99%)of those particles and it also comes with new technology to trap germs WITHOUT releasing any harmful ozone. Anyone who has ever worked with young children will understand how incredible helpful a few less germs would be for everyone’s sake.
I really think that this filter would make a difference for my students in music class. Every day we sing and dance and after any active game four or five children will end up having a coughing fit. We cannot change environmental injustice with one filter but I do believe that if we can make the air in my room cleaner my students would be better able to enjoy music and breath a little easier.
