This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school where many of my students come from families that are economically disadvantaged. Our school is considered high-poverty, and approximately 70% of our students receive free lunch.
I teach 19 students who come from so many different backgrounds, but who all have one thing in common: a desire to learn and play!
The students that come to me every day are silly, smart, and curious about the world around them! They take pride in everything they do, and there is nothing quite like experiencing the world through their eyes.
My Project
Our schedule this year begins super early, and my students are still trickling in over 30 minutes past the beginning of school! I am so happy to have them there, but we struggle with morning work because most kids are done by the time the last bus is coming in, and we start our day as soon as the kids arrive... no downtime!
With the addition of binders, sheet protectors, and cardstock, I will be able to create "Rise and Shine" binders full of engaging morning work activities.
Each child will have his/her own binder full of calendar activities, building numbers with tens and ones, and solving letter puzzles. The sheet protectors I'm requesting will allow the binder to be reused each day and differentiated for the kids who need more challenging activities! When it's time to clean up, there is no mess, no correcting, and a whole lot of happy kiddos who are busy and engaged.
If you walk into the classroom in the morning now, I have some kids doing morning work, some eating breakfast, some sitting on the rug reading books, and some playing with STEM materials. I would really love to keep this, but there's just so much cleaning up to be done, and it's hard to monitor in the morning. It is my hope that with the addition of these materials, I can give all kids a productive, fun learning activity for the morning that will allow me to be sure that the kids are all working on skills they need!
